WordPress widgets are a great way to add functionality and customization to your website. Widgets are small blocks of content that you can place in different areas of your website, such as the sidebar, footer, header, or any other widget-ready area. Widgets can display dynamic content such as recent posts, popular posts, categories, tags, search box, social media icons, and more.

In this tutorial, We will show you how to use WordPress widgets to enhance your website. I will cover the following topics:

  • How to access the WordPress widgets page
  • How to add a widget to a widget area
  • How to customize a widget’s settings
  • How to remove a widget from a widget area
  • How to use the WordPress customizer to preview and manage widgets

Let’s get started!

How to Access the WordPress Widgets Page

The WordPress widgets page is where you can see all the available widgets and widget areas for your website. To access the WordPress widgets page, you need to log in to your WordPress dashboard and go to Appearance » Widgets.

On the left side of the page, you will see a list of all the available widgets that you can use on your website. On the right side of the page, you will see a list of all the widget areas that your theme supports. Depending on your theme, you may have different widget areas such as sidebar, footer, header, etc.

How to Add a Widget to a Widget Area

To add a widget to a widget area, you need to drag and drop the widget from the left side of the page to the right side of the page. You can also click on the widget and select the widget area from the drop-down menu.

For example, if you want to add a search box widget to your sidebar, you can drag and drop the Search widget from the left side of the page to the Sidebar widget area on the right side of the page.

Alternatively, you can click on the Search widget and select Sidebar from the drop-down menu.

How to Customize a Widget’s Settings

After adding a widget to a widget area, you can customize its settings by clicking on the down arrow next to the widget title. This will expand the widget options where you can change the title, content, or other settings of the widget.

For example, if you want to change the title of the search box widget from Search to Find Something, you can type in Find Something in the title field and click on Save.

Some widgets may have more options than others. For example, the Recent Posts widget allows you to choose how many posts to show, whether to display the post date or not, and whether to filter by category or not.

You can experiment with different settings for different widgets and see how they affect your website.

How to Remove a Widget from a Widget Area

If you want to remove a widget from a widget area, you can simply drag and drop it back to the left side of the page or click on Delete at the bottom of the widget options.

For example, if you want to remove the search box widget from your sidebar, you can drag and drop it back to the left side of the page or click on Delete at the bottom of the widget options.

Note that deleting a widget will also delete its settings. If you want to keep its settings for future use, you can drag and drop it to the Inactive Widgets area at the bottom of the left side of the page. This will save your widget settings but hide it from your website.

How to Use the WordPress Customizer to Preview and Manage Widgets

Another way to preview and manage widgets is by using the WordPress customizer. The WordPress customizer allows you to see live changes on your website as you make them.

To access the WordPress customizer, you need to go to Appearance » Customize from your WordPress dashboard or click on Customize in the admin bar at the top of your website.

This will open a new panel on the left side of your screen where you can customize various aspects of your website such as site identity, colors, menus, widgets, etc.

To customize widgets using the WordPress customizer, you need to click on Widgets in the left panel. This will show you all the available widget areas for your website.

To add or edit a widget in a widget area using the WordPress customizer, you need to click on that widget area. This will show you all the widgets that are currently active in that widget area.

To add a new widget using the WordPress customizer, you need to click on Add a Widget at the bottom of that widget area. This will bring up a list of all available widgets that you can choose from.

To edit an existing widget using the WordPress customizer, you need to click on that widget. This will bring up the same widget options that you saw on the WordPress widgets page.

To remove a widget using the WordPress customizer, you need to click on that widget and then click on Remove at the bottom of the widget options.

The WordPress customizer also allows you to preview how your widgets look on different devices such as desktop, tablet, or mobile. You can switch between different devices by clicking on the icons at the bottom of the left panel.

Once you are happy with your widget settings, you can click on Publish at the top of the left panel to save your changes and make them live on your website.
